Principles of Governance

 

At M&T, we are all expected to act ethically, responsibly, and in the best interest of all our stakeholders, driven by our values, institutional knowledge, systemic risk management, and deep engagement in the communities we serve. 2022 highlights:

  • 24% of directors were women

  • 18% of directors were people of color

  • 59% of the company’s Board of Directors had been with M&T for five years or less

  • 225,117 hours completed by employees and contingent workers of Enterprise Mandatory Assigned Training, which contained mandatory regulatory and risk content

 

People

 

We are driven by a mission to make our communities better places to live. Our environmental sustainability strategy is rooted in a single purpose: Making a difference in people’s lives.

  • 284 colleagues in a leadership development program

  • 61% of new hires were women and 45% were people of color

  • 9.5 years of average employee tenure 

  • 33 average hours of training per employee

Prosperity

We strive to create a highly engaging work experience that drives employee satisfaction and empowers our team members to unlock their true potential and achieve their personal and professional goals. M&T colleagues experience the advantage of working in a large company with the rewards of working in a community-focused organization. 2022 highlights:

  • $2.26 billion in financing to projects which contain affordable housing

  • 1,440 Small Business Administration loans originated, totaling $203.8 million

  • ~159,000 hours dedicated to by M&T staff to volunteering in our communities

  • ~$47 million in M&T Charitable Foundation grants committed to supporting our communities

  • 2,657 home purchase loans to lowand moderate-income residents

Planet

We are driven by a mission to make our communities better places to live. Our environmental sustainability strategy is rooted in a single purpose: Making a difference in people’s lives. Last year, we grew climate finance and reduced our carbon footprint by:

  • $231.6 million invested in the renewable energy sector 

  • 13% reduced electricity consumption since 2019

  • 46% reduced Scope 1 emissions since 2019

  • 14% reduced Scope 2 emissions since 2019

It is our pleasure to share our ESG Report and ESG Index. The index is organized according to the World Economic Forum’s Stakeholder Capitalism Pillars: Planet, People and Prosperity.
