Activate your M&T Debit Card

Start using your new M&T Debit Card anywhere Visa® is accepted.

  • If you haven't activated your new M&T card, be sure to do so immediately by calling the phone number on the front sticker of your card or use it at any M&T ATM, including former People’s United ATMs
  • Update any recurring payments and your digital wallet by adding your M&T Debit Card and removing your People's United Debit Card to avoid service disruption
  • If you haven't received your M&T Debit Card, please call 1-800-724-2440
  • Your People's United Debit Card will no longer work on September 21, 2022

Top 5 Commonly Asked Questions

Continue to use your existing checks until they run out. When you order new checks, they will have M&T Bank's routing number.

For any new payments that you setup, we recommend that you use the M&T Bank routing number, 022000046.

Any existing direct deposits or transfers you have previously setup will continue without interruption.

If you have not yet logged in to M&T Online Banking for the first time, and forgot your passcode:

Click the 'Don't have your IDs or passcode' link on the first time log in page https://m.mtb.com/FirstTimeLogin/PeoplesUnited

If you have already logged in to M&T Online Banking:

Select the “Help with Your Passcode” link on the M&T Online Banking login screen. You’ll then need to enter your User ID and Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number. 

Next you’ll need to verify your identity. You can either use your M&T Debit Card or ATM Card, your M&T Credit Card, your M&T Online Banking Security Questions, your M&T Mortgage Account or other verification method. It’s important to note: 

  • If you use your M&T Debit or ATM card, you will also need your PIN number
  • If you use your M&T Credit Card, you will also need your 3-digit Security Code
  • If you opt to answer your security questions, you will need to answer two correctly
  • If you use your M&T Mortgage Account, you will need your account number

Once you’ve provided all the necessary information, you can change your passcode.

If you’ve logged in to M&T Mobile and Online Banking previously and need to unlock your account or reset your security questions, you can do that online.

You can also call our automated telephone banking system at 1-800-724-2440:

  • You will need your M&T Debit or ATM Card number and PIN, and your Social Security Number
  • When prompted select option 1, "Help me log in"
  • Select option 1, “My Password" 
  • Enter your ATM or Debit Card number, PIN, and Social Security Number, followed by Option 1, "Unlock"

You can check your account balance at any ATM, using your debit or ATM card.

You can also use your debit card by calling 1-800-724-2440. Select Option 1 “Account Information” at the Main Menu, enter your activated M&T debit card number and debit card PIN.

  • For your personal accounts, you can visit any M&T branch, or call 1-800-724-2440
  • For your business accounts, please contact your relationship manager, visit your local M&T branch, or call 1-800-724-6070
  • For your securities accounts, please contact your financial advisor
