Keeping destructive software off your computers

Help protect your business from fraud by learning how to detect malware.

Malware types

Cybercriminals use a variety of techniques to lure victims to unknowingly download harmful software known as malware. Once the malware is installed, the cybercriminal can use it to steal sensitive information, install more malware and demand money to unlock encrypted data. Many malware types exist, which means that every small business needs a strategy to combat them.

Ransomware is a form of malware that, when activated, encrypts or locks all of the files on a computer or network. The cybercriminal will then demand a ransom to restore access to the files. Spyware, another type of malware, maliciously monitors a user’s computer behavior and then replicates that behavior to steal information. And another kind of malware, viruses, can spread quickly throughout a computer or network to compromise performance.

M&T Bank can help your business get the right tools to build a strong defense and prevent the damage of malware.

How to check for malware

If your computer is running slower than normal, crashing repeatedly or performing in other abnormal ways, you may be the victim of a malware attack. You or your employees could unknowingly download malware by clicking on unsolicited links, opening unsolicited attachments and downloading free movies, shows or games.

A simple rule of thumb to follow is: “When in doubt, don’t click.” You can also install security software that scans your computer to look for malware. M&T can help you find the right solutions for your business.
