We went into a predominantly African-American community in our headquarters city in Buffalo, where we noticed they weren’t using our services. We did surveys—[the community said M&T] is wonderful, such a good corporate citizen. But we didn’t offer what they needed. So we asked the deep questions, and changed.
- RENÉ F JONES, CHAIRMAN AND CEO

At M&T, we are commited to investing in infrastructures that enable us to prioritize our deep understanding of multicultural consumers’ financial attitudes and behaviors. We teach them how to budget, how to responsibly own a home and how to grow their business - this is how we make a difference. This is how we uplift our communities.

Mentorship Program kicked off at Delaware State University
We strive to work closely with organizations and institutions in the communities we serve. At Delaware State University, the third largest public Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country, we have created an executive mentorship program. Senior managers at the bank will serve as mentors to DSU students, providing critical, needed professional development opportunities for the students and enable us to give back to the community in a meaningful way.
Mural celebrates local jazz legend
Our Kensington branch in Buffalo, New York showcases a beautiful mural that aims to uplift our community and the surrounding neighborhood by celebrating Grover Washington, Jr., a musician born in Buffalo whose impact was felt around the world. The mural will help bring new awareness and attention to this jazz legend whose story began right here in our hometown.

Golden Mile Branch supports local food bank
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all our communities. Our immigrant communities have been the hardest hit and many depend on the help of local organizations and non-profits during this time to help feed their families.
Our Golden Mile team members came together to donate funds to help purchase groceries for 70 families in the Frederick, Maryland area.
M&T sponsors virtual credit workshops
M&T partnered with Councilman Ulysses Wingo Sr. of the Masten District in Buffalo, New York teaching the fundamentals of building credit and understanding a credit report. A hot topic in today’s financial landscape, we have found that understanding credit is a topic of deep interest to this community and many people are looking for guidance to deepen their awareness. Educating, empowering and enlightening our communities and constituents on the importance of credit is critically important in improving the plight of our black and brown communities.
