Log into M&T Online Banking

If you haven't yet tried to access your accounts online or have tried, but have been unsuccessful, you can try resettng your passcode to gain access. Follow the steps below.

Reset passcode

If you've logged in to M&T Online Banking previously, but have forgotten your passcode, you can try to reset it online.

Enroll in M&T Online Banking

If you were previously enrolled in People's United Online Banking, you may not need to enroll in M&T Online Banking. Check for an email from mtb@email.mtb.com before proceeding.

M&T Online Banking first-time login instructions

Try resetting your passcode if you haven't yet tried to log in or haven't been able to successfully access your accounts online.

Step 1: Go to mtb.com/reset to get started. 

  • If you have previously logged in successfully, please ignore the steps below and login as you normally would at mtb.com/login
  • Do not use the M&T Mobile Banking app to log in for the first time

Step 2: Follow the prompts and enter the required information. You'll need:

  • Your People's United User ID
  • Your social security number
  • One of the following verification methods:
    • Your activated M&T Debit or ATM card and PIN (If you haven’t activated your Debit or ATM Card, follow the instructions on the sticker on the front of your card)
    • Your M&T Mortgage account number

You may need help resetting your passcode. You'll need to contact an M&T Representative at 1-800-790-9130 if:

  • You don’t know your People’s United User ID or
  • You’re People’s United User ID has a special character (e.g.,! $ # & * etc.) or 
  • You don't have or unable to activate your M&T Debit or ATM Card

Step 3: Once you receive confirmation on the screen that you have successfully reset your passcode, click the green "Log in to Online Banking" button.


Step 4: Log in to M&T Online Banking by entering your People's United User ID and newly created passcode.


Step 5: After you have logged in, you should be able to verify your account settings and enroll in electronic statements and notices.. 

  • Once you have successfully logged in and can see your accounts, you should log in directly at mtb.com/login or use the M&T Mobile Banking app for all future visits
  • You can download the M&T Mobile Banking app from the App Store® for iPhone® or Google Play™ for Android™

          

Account history, bill payments and transfers

Use M&T Online Banking on your desktop to view account history and update bill payments and transfers.

Certain types of bill payments and payees may not have automatically migrated to M&T Online Banking and verify your payments and payees.

Scheduled transfers will need to be set-up after logging in to M&T Mobile or Online Banking. Transfers that were previously established did not migrate from People’s United.

If you haven't yet logged in to M&T Online Banking for the first time or have tried to log in but were unsuccessful:

  • Your People’s United Online Banking User ID
  • Your Social Security Number

If you have already logged in to M&T Online Banking:

Go to mtb.com/reset

You'll be asked to enter your User ID and Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number. 

Next you’ll need to verify your identity. You can either use your M&T Debit Card or ATM Card, your M&T Credit Card, your M&T Online Banking Security Questions, your M&T Mortgage Account or other verification method. It’s important to note: 

  • If you use your M&T Debit or ATM card, you will also need your PIN number
  • If you use your M&T Credit Card, you will also need your 3-digit Security Code
  • If you opt to answer your security questions, you will need to answer two correctly
  • If you use your M&T Mortgage Account, you will need your account number

Once you’ve provided all the necessary information, you can change your passcode and use your User ID and newly created passcode to log in to M&T Online Banking.

If you’ve logged in to M&T Mobile and Online Banking previously and need to unlock your account or reset your security questions, you can do that online.

You can also call our automated telephone banking system at 1-800-790-9130:

  • You will need your M&T Debit or ATM Card number and PIN, and your Social Security Number
  • When prompted select option 1, "Help me log in"
  • Select option 1, “My Password" 
  • Enter your ATM or Debit Card number, PIN, and Social Security Number, followed by Option 1, "Unlock"

People’s United online statements and documents will not be viewable through M&T Online Banking.

However, you will be able to request paper copies of historical electronic statements for current or closed accounts for a fee by calling us at 1-800-724-2440 or visiting a branch.

Please note we will waive any fees for copies of your statements for 60 days post transition weekend.

  • We have worked to migrate several digital services, including bill payments, to M&T Mobile and Online Banking. Please note that exceptions may apply. For more information, please visit the M&T Notice of Changes to Digital Services for Personal Accounts (PDF)
  • Please log in to M&T Mobile and Online Banking and verify your payments and payees

Accessing M&T Online Banking from your desktop computer or browser:

  • For checking accounts, you can see 60 days of People’s United transaction history. We are working to provide additional transaction history for checking accounts
  • For savings accounts, you can see 18 months of People’s United transaction history

Accessing M&T Mobile Banking from the mobile app:

  • People’s United transaction history is not available in the M&T mobile app
  • To see your People’s United transaction history please access M&T Online Banking

M&T Online  and Mobile Bill Pay cannot be used to make payments: (i) to payees located outside the United States; (ii) to taxing authorities or other government entities; (iii) required under court order (e.g. child support); or (iv) in connection with any unlawful activity or purpose.

M&T Bank Alerts are available for your M&T Card through M&T Online Banking. Suspicious activity alerts notify customers of certain potentially fraudulent activity on their M&T Card. Alerts are designed to be a helpful account management tool, but they do not identify all potential fraudulent activity and are not a substitute for security and fraud precautions including, but not limited to, verifying statements and being aware of your outstanding payments and available balance. For your protection, “suspicious activity” and “card PIN change” email alerts cannot be disabled. M&T Bank is not liable for any losses customers may incur due to an alert not being delivered. Your mobile carrier's text messaging and data charges may apply.

You can use the M&T Mobile Banking App to manage your accounts on your mobile device.

M&T Flash Funds

Provides the option, for a fee, to make an eligible mobile deposit immediately available for withdrawals or purchases.

Deposits are subject to verification. Funds not available for immediate withdrawal. Deposit limits and other terms, conditions, fees and restrictions may apply. Business day is defined as Monday through Friday, except Federal Holidays. 
If selected, your mobile deposit will be immediately available. The fee for this service is 2% of the total check amount ($2 minimum charge). The fee will be deducted from your account following the completion of your deposit. If the deposit is made during our nightly processing, it will not be available to pay debit items that are processed for payment during that night’s processing. However, it would be immediately available for withdrawal.

Keep your information out of the mail and easily accessible.

Storage for electronic statements if accessed via M&T Online Banking: up to 7 years for checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, installment loans, lines of credit, mortgages and home equity accounts. For most accounts, by enrolling in M&T's online statements and notices, you will no longer receive paper statements. You may, however, switch back to paper at any time.
